General Liability Information
Golan’s employs professional movers who take all necessary precautions to ensure the safe handling of your belongings. However, please review the following carefully:
- Boxes Packed by Owner (PBO):
Liability is limited to evidence of negligent handling. Claims for PBO boxes with no visible exterior damage may be declined. - Electronics and Mechanical Items:
Golan’s is not liable for the internal functioning of such items unless negligence is evident, regardless of who packed or unpacked them. - Pressboard, Particleboard, or Ready-to-Assemble Furniture:
These materials may not withstand normal moving procedures, and Golan’s is not responsible for damage caused during disassembly or reassembly. - Exercise Equipment:
Golan’s does not disassemble or reassemble treadmills, ellipticals, or similar equipment. If you request this service, you must sign a Release of Liability form. We recommend handling this through a qualified vendor. - Homeowners or Renters Insurance:
Golan’s recommends checking your insurance policy to understand coverage for household goods during the move.
For customers requesting storage, the coverage that is chosen (Option #1 or #2 as described below) will be effective for both the pick up and the delivery of the shipment. For coverage options while in storage, please refer to options #1a and #2a.
Moving Insurance Options in Chicago for Local Moves
The local moving coverage is designed for moves conducted within Illinois. It reflects a focus on localized services and offers two primary coverage options:
1. Limited Liability Coverage
- Description: This is the standard liability coverage included at no additional charge. It represents the minimum legal obligation of the moving company in case of loss or damage.
- Coverage Rate: The carrier’s liability is limited to $0.30 per pound per article.
- Example: If a 20-pound item is lost or damaged, the compensation would be calculated as 20 lbs. x $0.30 = $6.00.
- Best For: Customers looking for basic protection during their local move without incurring additional costs.
2. Declared Value Protection
- Description: This is an upgraded protection plan based on the total declared value of the shipment. While not classified as insurance, it provides greater coverage compared to limited liability.
- Coverage Rate: Customers declare the actual depreciated value of their goods, with a charge of $15 per $1,000 of declared value. There is a minimum charge of $45 for a $3,000 declared value.
- Example: If a declared value of $10,000 is chosen, the customer would pay $150 for this coverage.
- Settlement Options: In the event of loss or damage, the mover will either:
- Repair the item to its pre-move condition.
- Compensate the customer based on the depreciated value of the item.
- Best For: Customers who want added financial security and higher coverage for valuable belongings during a local move.
Important Information
While it is convenient to purchase a minimum amount of coverage, the stipulations of Option 2 require our customers to choose an amount of coverage that will accurately reflect the value of the belongings being transported by Golan’s. Please do not underestimate the value of your goods. This may reduce the mover’s liability proportionately.

- Coverage rate: The carrier’s liability is limited to $0.60 per pound per article.
- Example: If a 20-pound item is lost or damaged, the compensation would be calculated as 20 lbs. x $0.60 = $12.00.
- Best for: Customers seeking the most economical coverage for their interstate move.
2. Full Value Protection (FVP)
- Description: Full Value Protection is the most comprehensive option available. While not classified as insurance, it provides broader coverage compared to limited liability. This plan ensures compensation for the current market value of the item, repairs, or replacement.
- Coverage rate: The cost is based on the declared value of the shipment and may vary depending on the agreement with the moving company.
- Settlement options: If an item is lost, damaged, or destroyed, the mover will:
- Repair the item to its pre-move condition.
- Replace it with a similar item of equivalent value.
- Provide a cash settlement equal to the current market value.
- Best for: Customers who want full peace of mind and higher financial protection for valuable or irreplaceable items during long-distance moves.
Please refer to the chart below for FVP rate information. The minimum liability you can declare is the estimated weight of the shipment multiplied by $6.00.
