If you’re planning to move to or around Chicago, it’s important to know the city has more than 75 different neighborhoods. Deciphering between each area can be overwhelming. That’s why this series of blogs is breaking them down alphabetically. In this installment, neighborhoods starting with the letter J are examined.

Jefferson Park balances its historic heritage with handsome homes, local establishments, ethnic culture and neighborhood festivals. Although only 10 miles northwest of the Loop, residents will feel like they’re in the country since many of the area homes—from Georgians and Victorians to bungalows and ranches—feature front and backyards. That’s in addition to offering access to Wilson Park on Milwaukee Avenue and Dunham Park on Melvina.

If indoor games are more your style, Jefferson Park has Chris’s Billiards on Milwaukee Avenue (where Martin Scorsese shot “The Color of Money”) and Habetler Bowling Alley on Northwest Highway where nightly specials on lanes are offered. Best of all, there’s Jeff Fest, a neighborhood party on Higgins and Milwaukee every June and Taste of Polonia on Lawrence Avenue each Labor Day Weekend.

Also 10 miles from the Loop is Jackson Park Highlands. The prestigious south side neighborhood has been home to celebrated figures such as Reverend Jesse Jackson and Gale Sayers. It offers a variety of architecture and home options—from detached single-family dwellings to contemporary condos—as well as Jackson Park which includes an 18-hole golf course!

Located just 16 miles south of downtown is Jeffrey Manor which features affordable post-World War II homes, townhouses and duplexes on winding streets. The area also includes Bradley Park on Yates Avenue, Merrill Park on E. 97th Street, the Slender MS Health Club on Jeffrey Avenue, a public library on E. 100th Street, the Royal Lounge on Torrence Avenue, and shopping options on E. 95th Street.

Wherever you choose to move, Golan’s Moving and Storage can transport your possessions in a safe and stress-free way. Since 1990, the Chicago moving company has successfully handled local, national and international relocations.
