Local Moving Coverage

Please read the following information carefully. One of the two options must be chosen before the movers can begin.

(Please note options for coverage while in storage, also listed below.)

Golan’s employs professional movers who will take all precautions in preparing and moving your belongings.

Since Golan’s cannot control whether proper packing methods were used on boxes not packed by our staff (packed by owner or PBO), liability is limited to actual evidence of negligent handling. Golan’s may decline a claim on any box PBO, for which no exterior damage is visible. In addition, except in cases of negligence, Golan’s will not be held liable for the internal functioning of electronic or mechanical items, regardless of who packed or unpacked them. Pressboard, particleboard, or engineered ready-to-assemble wood generally may not withstand normal moving procedures, such as disassembly or reassembly. We may deny any responsibility for items made of this material or for inherent vice.

Golan’s recommends checking with your homeowners or renters coverage to determine the extent to which your household goods may be covered during the course of your move.

Golan’s Moving & Storage, Inc. provides two coverage options: Limited Liability and Declared Value Protection.

For customers requesting storage, the coverage that is chosen (Option #1 or #2 as described below) will be effective for both the pick up and the delivery of the shipment.

For coverage options while in storage, please refer to options #1a and #2a.

OPTION 1 – LIMITED LIABILITY:

As a licensed common carrier with the Illinois Commerce Commission, we provide limited liability coverage at no extra charge.

For local moves in the state of Illinois, the maximum liability of the carrier is limited to $0.30 per pound per article, in the event of damage or loss. Our tariff rate provides for this coverage at no additional cost to the customer. If this option is selected, the shipper signing the contract must state (in his or her own handwriting) either a declaration of the actual value of the shipment (explained below as Option 2, Declared Value Protection) or the words “30 cents per pound per article.” Otherwise, the shipment will be deemed released to a maximum value equal to $2.00 times the weight of the shipment in pounds.

Example: If an item weighing 20 lbs. was lost or damaged, the carrier would be liable to the customer for $6.00,

(20 lbs. x $.30 = $6.00).

Option 1a: When limited liability is selected at pick-up, coverage while in storage is also at $0.30 per lb per article.

OPTION 2 – DECLARED VALUE PROTECTION: (This is not a policy of insurance)

This coverage option is not from an insurance company. It covers damage to the shipper’s goods only if the damage was caused as a direct result of mover’s negligence. The decision to repair or settle is based on whichever is more cost effective. If the item cannot be repaired, Golan’s will reimburse for the depreciated value of the article (not full replacement value).

The charge for this option is $15 per $1,000 declared value. We charge a minimum of $45 for each move ($3000 declared value). If this option is selected, the client estimates the actual value (depreciated value) of the shipment and states this value on the contract.

For customers requesting storage, the coverage applies for both the move in and the move out of storage. (Please note, additional pick ups ordered at the time of delivery are independent of the original coverage and new coverage must chosen for the additional items to be handled.)

Option 2a: When additional liability is selected at pick up, storage valuation while in storage is 10% above the applicable storage rate. For example, if your daily storage rate is $10 per day and you have selected Declared Value Protection, you will owe an additional $1.00 per day for storage valuation. The minimum storage valuation rate is $0.75 per day.

Important Information

While it is convenient to purchase a minimum amount of coverage, the stipulations of Option 2 require our customers to choose an amount of coverage that will accurately reflect the value of the belongings being transported by Golan’s. Please do not underestimate the value of your goods. This may reduce the mover’s liability proportionately.
